In Search of Enlightenment – the story of TACOYO

TACOYO is a Body & Mind group workout to music. It was  founded in The Netherlands around 1980 by Taco Veldstra. TACOYO, an abbreviation of Veldstra’s first name TACO and Yo(ga), tells the story of a man in search of the ‘perfect way’ to release feelings of stress and tension through physical exercise.

TACOYO's GOAL:

TACOYO is a workout that nowadays we would describe as an Extensive Interval Training combined with micro-pauses. Its idea is as simple as it is effective;

Apply stress to the body (exercise), and then facilitate the body’s natural way of releasing this stress with simple awareness and relaxation techniques. This mindful way of training will not only give you a better physique, but will also teach you how to release stress.

TACOYO’S training goal is to bring greater Body & Mind balance to participants. It sets out to increase Endurance, Coordination, Flexibility, Power and Agility, 
and will release stress and tension with long lasting effects.

"In search of enlightenment".

1975 - 1980 

Around 1975 Taco suffered badly from stress in his profession as a physical education teacher, and  felt unhappy with his doctor’s advice just to stay in bed and wait for it to go away. Being active in a variety of sports such as  tennis, running, ice skating and swimming he discovered these activities only temporarily released him from his lack of energy, a lack of energy nowadays known as burnout.

Exercise alone was not enough, as the positive effects were not lasting. So he began practicing stress release alternatives such as Yoga, Meditation, Progressive Muscle Relaxation (Jacobson ) and Autogenic Training (Schultz,) and started to combine these techniques with physical exercises.

He also discovered that music had an influence on the subconscious in releasing stress. Especially the classical Adagio’s had a very positive effect on his mood and energy levels.  

THE 3-WAY COMBINATION

Taco started to combine his newly discovered three-way system for stress relief (Exercise, Relaxation and Music) into one single workout that would become TACOYO, as we know it today. 

TACOYO still uses these three ground rules.

1: Exercises that train not only the large muscle groups, but also the cardiovascular system in one single movement.

2: Simple relaxation techniques that are easy to learn and long lasting.

3: Energetic music that stimulates exercise, and relaxing music that enables the subconscious to release tension. 

A BOOK PUBLICATION – TACOYO ANTI-STRESS TRAINING

Over years of trial and error, mixing and combining varieties of exercise and relaxation techniques, TACOYO emerged with a set framework for people to follow. More and more participants and trainers in The Netherlands joined in this ground breaking way of working out to music. 

In fact, TACOYO was the first group workout of its kind. Even before Aerobics  became so popular in the mid-eighties. Throughout the nineties he began training other TACOYO trainers, and published a book about the workout method called:

“TACOYO Anti-Stress Training”, which is still used in our trainer program today.  

2010  – NEW MANAGEMENT

By 2010 Taco Veldstra had trained over 45 freelance TACOYO trainers in The Netherlands. He then decided to invite Rob Szepesi, a TACOYO trainer himself, to join the management team. Rob and Taco decided to initiate a far-reaching research into the effects of TACOYO as a group workout among hundreds of participants throughout The Netherlands before taking the company further afield.

Szepesi invited two of his colleagues to join the team. Drs. Frank Pelder and Drs. Arjan van der Hoorn joined the team as Human Movement specialists to investigate the scientific effects of the workout. The new management team became Tacoyo Nederland B.V. the legal vehicle and umbrella organization of all TACOYO clubs and trainers today.

Between 2010 and 2012 the new management team tested TACOYO out at fitness clubs throughout The Netherlands, and it became recognized as a valuable contribution to the professional fitness market. From 2012 onwards more and more gyms in The Netherlands started to offer TACOYO in their weekly schedules, and continue to do so with great success.

TACOYO FOR BUSINESSES

Over  the years many companies and businesses have demonstrated their interest in TACOYO in helping their employees get into shape, and to offer them coping strategies for burnout and stress prevention.

To meet this demand Tacoyo Nederland trains trainers to conduct TACOYO clinics for companies. Now TACOYO trainers are booked for in-company training days to teach employees how to cope with stress and burnout.

These workshops are fun, musical and give eye-opening insight into stress levels, breathing, posture and exercise.

In 2014 TACOYO was practiced in 70 cities and towns in The Netherlands. More than 25 companies have enjoyed TACOYO over the years, and we have a growing team of currently 65 trainers in The Netherlands.

Tacoyo Nederland strives to make TACOYO a household name in the professional world of fitness and business in the years to come.
